General:
Perennial herb from a thick cluster of somewhat fleshy, fibrous roots; stems erect, 30-80 (120) cm tall, bases sometimes reddish, short-hairy.
Leaves:
Basal leaves soon deciduous; stem leaves 9-18, stalked, 3-parted, the leaflets unstalked, wedge-shaped, the blades semi-circular, 1-5 cm long, 1.5-7 cm wide, short-hairy, shallowly lobed, the ultimate segments 5-19, those of the basal leaves 2-8 (15) mm wide, those of the stem leaves 0.5-3 (5) mm wide.
Flowers:
Inflorescence an 8- to 30-flowered terminal raceme, the flowers bilaterally symmetrical; bracts 0-3 mm below flowers; flower stalks short-hairy, 5-15 mm long; petals 4, blue, the lower ones covering the stamens; sepals dark blue to bluish-purple, 8-12 mm long, short-hairy, the spurs straight, horizontal, 9-15 mm long; stamens many; pistils 3 (5).
Fruits:
Follicles, 7-13 mm long, 3.5- to 4-times longer than wide, more or less short-hairy and glandular; seeds angled, pale-fringed, roughened.
